Bill Preston of Lake Tekapo was a keen hunter and from an early age developed an interest in flying, after being flown into various locations in NZ. So in 1971 he began learning to fly and got his Private pilot's licence in 1974 getting a rating for a Piper cub, Cessna and Cherokee. He continued flying until 1977 when he followed other pursuits. Thirty two years later he had a strong desire to fly again so instead of the usual Aeroclubs he decided to purchase a slow build kit from Australia a "Tekweld Supapup" which is very similar to a Piper Cub,
The Kit arrived on 8th April 2004 and in the garage attached to the house was where he spent many many hours building it.
It was finally ready for a test flight on 27th June 2009. there were no words to express the feeling of seeing it take off and fly for the first time from Tekapo Airport. It was a dream come true and testament to all the hard work paying off.
The next big moment was for Bill to actually fly it himself. After checking everything very carefully and putting a few more finishing touches to the plane on 19th August 2009, Bill finally chose a local airstrip to test it himself, with just a few close friends to share this special moment Bill took to the air. Again this was one of those days you never forget.
Since then he has spent many very happy hours flying around the mountains whenever the weather would allow. In February 2014 Bill sold the plane and now passes many happy hours building a model of the original plane.
